“Die Gläserne Manufaktur” – Enduring symbol of a fresh start for the Volkswagen brand
“Die Gläserne Manufaktur” (The Transparent Factory) was built in 2001 in the heart of the city of Dresden to introduce the world to something unique: an opportunity to experience Volkswagen manufacturing up close.
Volkswagen combined the construction of “Die Gläserne Manufaktur” with the idea behind its new premium class vehicle – associating innovative car making with the values passed on by more traditional plants, and communicating this clearly to the world in the building’s open and transparent architecture.
The top-of-the range Phaeton was the “masterpiece” of the Volkswagen brand for more than 14 years. Visitors could also appreciate this in the high-quality materials used, the detail in the intelligent solutions and the precision workmanship.
Conversion of “Die Gläserne Manufaktur” began in March 2016. An interactive exhibition on electromobility and digitalization accompanied this first stage of the rebuilding of “Die Gläserne Manufaktur”: its production technology was turned into a flexible assembly. Flexible mounting frames were installed and the production as well as the logistics processes adapted. This means that Dresden now is perfectly positioned for the assembly of premium and luxury models as well as electric vehicles. The production of the e-Golf started in April 2017.
New entrepreneurial activities of "Die Gläserne Manufaktur" are added: the development of innovative mobility services together with the state capital Dresden, a highly modern workspace for startups and new experiences for customers and fans of the Volkswagen brand.
As a new center of future mobility "Die Gläserne Manufaktur" will thus continue to be what is has always been: a living place in the ever-changing world of automobility.
